# AI Overviews

AI Overviews are Google's generated summaries shown at the top of some search results, with links to supporting web pages. Google tested them as the Search Generative Experience in Search Labs from May 2023 and launched them to everyone in the US in May 2024. Google says there are no special requirements to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. For a site, visibility depends on normal Search eligibility plus passages that directly answer the query.

## What are AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results pages, with links to web pages that support the answer. Google [launched them to everyone in the US on May 14, 2024](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/).

Google describes them as powered by a customised language model integrated with its core web ranking systems, per its [May 30, 2024 post](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/ai-overviews-update-may-2024/).

## How did AI Overviews develop from SGE?

AI Overviews began as an experiment. The dated timeline:

- **May 10, 2023:** Google announces the Search Generative Experience ({{SGE|Search Generative Experience}}) as an opt-in experiment in Search Labs ([Google](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-search/)).
- **May 14, 2024:** AI Overviews begin rolling out to everyone in the US ([Google](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/)).
- **May 30, 2024:** after widely shared errors, Google publishes more than a dozen technical improvements, including better detection of nonsensical queries and limits on satire and user-generated content ([Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/ai-overviews-update-may-2024/)).
- **October 28, 2024:** rollout to more than 100 countries and territories, with more than 1 billion global users every month ([Google](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/search/ai-overviews-search-october-2024/)).

## What evidence is there that Google uses AI Overviews?

This is confirmed. Google announces AI Overviews on its blog and documents them for site owners on Search Central in [AI features and your website](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features). The open questions are about how sources are selected, not whether the feature exists.

Google says the feature is grounded in its web index rather than free-standing model output. The same documentation says both AI Overviews and [AI Mode](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/search-systems/ai-mode-query-fan-out) may use a query fan-out technique, issuing multiple related searches to build a response.

## How does a page become eligible for AI Overviews?

Google's documentation sets a floor, not a formula: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Pages blocked by noindex, nosnippet or a max-snippet of 0 remove themselves from contention. Google also says there are no special optimisations required, which means no dedicated markup or file is needed.

Beyond eligibility, the practical lever is the passage. Because answers are assembled from web results for the query and related fan-out queries, a page that states a direct, self-contained answer to a subquery near the heading that asks it gives the system something to cite.

## What are the common myths about AI Overviews?

**Myth: you need special schema or an llms.txt file.** Google's [AI features documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features) says no additional requirements apply.

**Myth: being cited means losing the click.** Evidence is mixed. Google said in [May 2024](https://blog.google/products/search/generative-ai-google-search-may-2024/) that links in AI Overviews get more clicks than the same page as a traditional listing for that query; that is Google's own measurement and should be tested against your Search Console data.

## Which Laurelin audit checks test for AI Overviews?

The new check, [target queries show an AI Overview but the site is not cited](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/377-target-queries-show-an-ai-overview-but-the-site-is-not-cited), measures citation directly for the queries that matter. It measures outcomes, which Google does confirm exist, but it cannot see why a source was or was not selected.

Related existing checks:

- [Meta robots nosnippet kills AI feature eligibility](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/technical-foundations/12-meta-robots-nosnippet-kills-ai-feature-eligibility): fails the snippet requirement outright.
- [max-snippet 0 directive](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/technical-foundations/13-max-snippet-0-directive): the same effect by another route.
- [data-nosnippet wrapping primary content](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/technical-foundations/15-data-nosnippet-wrapping-primary-content): hides the passages most likely to be cited.
- [Answer buried, lead doesn't answer](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/172-answer-buried-lead-doesn-t-answer): pages that do not state the answer early are harder to cite.
- [Passages not self-contained](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/171-passages-not-self-contained): passages that depend on surrounding context are weak citation candidates.
