# Reviews system

The reviews system is a confirmed Google ranking system that aims to reward reviews offering insightful analysis and original research by experts or enthusiasts. It began as the product reviews update in April 2021 and was broadened to reviews of any topic in 2023. Google says it evaluates first-party review content, mainly page by page, but can assess a whole site with substantial review content. For a site, this means review and best-of pages need visible first-hand evidence, not rewritten manufacturer specifications.

## What is the Google reviews system?

The reviews system is a Google ranking system that aims to reward high-quality reviews: content that provides insightful analysis and original research, written by people who know the topic. Google names it in its [ranking systems guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ranking-systems-guide) and gives it a [dedicated documentation page](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/reviews-system).

It started life as the [product reviews update](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2021/04/product-reviews-update) in April 2021. The [Search Status Dashboard](https://status.search.google.com/products/rGHU1u87FJnkP6W2GwMi/history) shows the name changing from "product reviews update" in February 2023 to "reviews update" in April 2023.

## How does the reviews system evaluate content?

Google's [documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/reviews-system) sets the scope precisely. It evaluates first-party standalone content written to recommend, give an opinion or analyse: single reviews, head-to-head comparisons and ranked lists. Reviews can cover products, media, services or businesses. It does not assess user reviews on product or service pages.

It works mainly at page level, but Google says a site with a substantial amount of review content may have any of its content evaluated. Product structured data can help Google identify a product review, but Google says it does not depend on it. Google lists English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Russian, Dutch, Portuguese and Polish as covered languages.

## What evidence is there that Google uses the reviews system?

The evidence label is **Confirmed**. Google documents the system, lists it as a current system in its ranking guide, and announced named updates on its [Search Status Dashboard](https://status.search.google.com/products/rGHU1u87FJnkP6W2GwMi/history) from December 2021 to November 2023. Google's documentation now says the system is improved at a regular and ongoing pace, so review sites should not wait for a named update to judge recovery.

What Google has not published is how review quality is scored. The best practices below are Google's stated criteria, not a disclosed feature list.

## What should review sites do?

Google's [review best practices](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/specialty/ecommerce/write-high-quality-reviews) are unusually concrete, which makes them auditable. Each review should show evidence of the reviewer's own experience, quantitative measurements, comparison with alternatives, benefits and drawbacks from original research, and why a product is "best" when it is ranked first.

- Add original photos, video, audio or test data from your own use of the product.
- State the test method and measurements, not just the manufacturer's specifications.
- On ranked lists, give each pick enough substance to stand alone and say why it wins.
- Link to more than one seller where affiliate links are used.

## Which Laurelin audit checks test for the reviews system?

The new check, [Review or best-of pages show no first-hand evidence of testing](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/349-review-or-best-of-pages-show-no-first-hand-evidence-of-testing), inspects review templates for original media, measurements and reasons for rankings. It tests Google's documented criteria; it cannot see Google's internal score.

Related checks: [no first-hand experience evident](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/trust-signals/219-no-first-hand-experience-evident) is the general version of the same test; [no first-hand experience or unique point of view](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/162-no-first-hand-experience-unique-pov) covers opinion content; [commodity content](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/topical-content/160-commodity-content) catches reviews that restate specifications.

[Author has no bio or credentials](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/trust-signals/215-author-has-no-bio-credentials) tests whether the reviewer is shown to be an expert or enthusiast, and [self-serving fake review markup](https://www.laurelinlabs.com/audit/authority-network/261-self-serving-fake-review-markup) catches review structured data that misrepresents who wrote the review.
