1.7 XML sitemapsMediumVerified

No XML sitemap

A sitemap is not mandatory, but on any site beyond a handful of pages it is the most reliable way to tell Google what exists. Without one I am relying entirely on links for discovery.

What it is

No sitemap provided.

Why it matters

Slower discovery, especially for large or poorly-linked sites.

How to fix it

Generate and submit a sitemap.

How to find it on your site

  1. Check for /sitemap.xml or a sitemap index at the root.
  2. Look for a Sitemap directive in robots.txt.
  3. If none exists, generate one covering your canonical, indexable URLs.
  4. Submit it in Search Console and reference it in robots.txt.

Cross-reference to ranking and citation factors

Sitemaps aid discovery and freshness rather than ranking directly, but missing one slows how quickly new and updated pages are found.

Impact

Low-medium discovery. Direct.
